MMA’s approach to designing the replacement pavilion was focused on stewardship of the pristine natural beachfront and dune-scape by subtly blending landforms with modern building masses, remaining entirely within the previous building’s footprint. Drawing from the mid-century character of the original building and inspired by the National Park Service’s philosophy that architecture in nature should feel like it belongs, we set out to design something quiet but meaningful. A modern beach house that feels rooted in place.

The new Channel Beach Pavilion will provide a modern, energy-efficient, and welcoming facility that enhances the park experience for guests, visitors, and the DNR park staff. Inside and out the pavilion is designed to serve everyone with updated restrooms, changing rooms, shaded picnic spots, a foot-wash station, room for food trucks, and a maintenance facility to support DNR park staff, all of which are universally accessible, durable, and built to last.
