Megan Feenstra Wall, principal at Mathison | Mathison Architects, is not anticipating a drop-off in 2024 for nonresidential projects, but she has noticed multiple nonresidential projects this year that received fewer bids than expected. However, the fewer bids may be a result of labor challenges. In the past year, 45 states have added construction jobs, according to an analysis of federal employment data released this month from the Associated General Contractors of America. Despite the job gains, widespread construction labor shortages persist, and many firms would have likely hired more workers if there were enough qualified candidates, according to association officials.“We’ve experienced this low bid turnout with multiple construction managers, and it appears to be due to lack of availability in various trades,” Feenstra Wall said.
